History
Mangalore is a rapidly growing city of Karnataka, India where agriculture and fishing is a predominant occupation of the residents. Recently, the establishment of few large scale industries, promoted the rapid development of the city which resulted in the change of structure and function of the families. The mobility rate of younger generation and increased number of women taking up job alienated the aged in the community. This resulted in keeping the elders in the oldage home. But old age home will not substitute the family. Hence with an intention to improve the functional ability of the elders this trust was developed.
Who We Are
With an dream to improve the living of the elders, for the prevention and promotion of the health care and also the empowerment of the women, the objectives of the trust was framed. Keeping the main aim of increasing social network among the elders and to bring quality in their living the activites of Nirel is scheduled. The Nirel Charitable Trust was established and registered on 24th of December 2010 for the convenience of administration and development.
Nurturing Individual Development, Research, Education, and Literature, in short called to be ‘NIREL’, started in 2010, with a vision of creating a pathway to provide a quality life to the aging population in specific and by setting apart and establishing the same for the upliftment, rehabilitation and overall betterment of the society. Till date the organisation worked on community basis, conducting several programs for the senior citizens, students, women and youth.
Saga of Nirel
The first step of ‘NIREL’ was to en route women towards their well-being and growth and help them be self-reliant and hence various programs were conducted by the organisation. Awareness programs on nutrition, hygiene and sanitation, self-employment were conducted with demonstration. Along with this, tailoring, embroidery classes, beautician courses, bag making and jewellery making training programs were conducted, in collaboration with the department of Mangalore City Corporation. Three stitching machines was arranged by the organisation for the training purpose. These programs assured a new life style for the women of the community, which witnessed them being entrepreneurs.
‘NIREL’ also took a step ahead, promoting mental health among women and senior citizens, where numerous programs were arranged with talks by the mental health professionals for Mahila Mandals, parents of the students in the schools.
In, recognising the service rendered by an Anganwadi worker, in Boloor Community, was honoured. As a preparation for the exams in school, a talk was arranged by the expert about learning habits, which benefited the students abundantly.
As the main aim of the organisation, ‘NIREL’ also worked for the senior citizens. The idea was to give quality and productive life to the elders. Hence, in 2015, the elders of the community were brought together and a platform named as ‘senior citizen association’ was created where they could meet and discuss their problems. This helped the organisation to identify and help the senior citizens. Student social workers were posted in the community who worked in the area and with their collaboration programs were arranged which provided them entertainment too. A television set was donated to the anganwady in the community. As a continuation to this activity, the organisation donated a walking stick to one of the needy elder.
